A Perspective on How a Young Canadian Consumes News

This blogs post is written by guest Blogger Kieran Sagar, student of the Western Continous Studies PR Diploma in Canada.

She will give us her perspective on how she and her peers consume news.

In today’s digital age, news consumption has drastically changed for Canadians, especially the younger generation.

My name is Kieran, and I am a guest writer for Alejandro’s blog this week. As a young Canadian in her early twenties, the way I receive my news has been altered within the past few years. This is my experience.

In 2022, Bill C-18 was introduced by the Federal government with hopes of providing fair compensation to news publishers from media giants such as Meta. However, with this bill came a censorship of news coverage on social media platforms. This posed a significant problem for me. The way that I had been receiving my news disappeared overnight. But as an aspiring PR professional, I quickly realized that I would have to seek alternate ways to stay-up to date with the latest news.

Here is how I’ve adapted to stay informed.

Manually searching top publications.

Every morning, while I drink a cup of tea, I like to search sites such as the Globe and Mail, CBC, and some local sources. Since I do not have a subscription to these sources, I often read the titles, and if a title interests me, I will Google that topic in depth.

Twitter/X

For more breaking news, I will search the topic on Twitter to see what others are saying about it. Typically, I will do this for any coverage coming out of my town or school.

Google Alerts

The last thing I learned to do is to set various Google Alerts for topics that interest me, such as keywords related to my job, upcoming events or areas of interest to me. These alerts create an automatic email with headlines related to the topic.

Thank you for reading my guest blog post for Alejandro’s blog. I hope you enjoyed reading a young Canadian perspective on news consumption. How do you consume the news in today’s digital age? If you have any tips or tricks, please comment on them below!
